Native American History

The Painted Desert is in the Petrified Forest National Wilderness Area and is part of the Navajo Nation. Another famous archaeological site is Casa Malpais. It was built around 1260 and was inhabited until about 1400. It is in Springerville and is surrounded by over 400 volcanoes. It is still considered a sacred ancestral place by the Hopi and Zuni Indian tribes. The site contains a 60-room pueblo, a solar calendar and a Great Kiva.

The more recent history in the area includes Fort Apache, which is possibly one of the most recognized names from the American West. Mostly famous because of the Indian warriors Geronimo and Cochise, the fort is owned by the White Mountain Apache Tribe and is on the National Register of Historic Places. There are many buildings still standing from the original fort.

There are several annual festivals in the White Mountains including Fishing Derby in April, Native American Festival in July, Motorcycle Rally in August as well as a Bluegrass Festival and an OctoberFest in October.
