Major Attractions
Although the town itself is located on a protected bay on Guererro's coast, plenty of fine beaches are nearby. The Playa la Ropa is a mile-long stretch of white sand near the mouth of the bay. Its gentle surf and low descent gradient are perfect for families with small children. Snorkeling and sailboarding are popular activities here. Close by is the Playa las Gatas, a smallish nook on one side of the bay. It's accessible by skiff, and its fine swimming beach is ringed by restaurants and outdoor bars.
Ixtapa Island is accessed via water taxi. Several major resorts are located here, but the island is otherwise unpopulated. The island has four beaches, each with a different directional orientation.
Just to the southeast of town is the famous archeological site of Xihuacan. For nearly 3,000 years, this area was inhabited by native tribes, and when you visit today, you'll see remnants of ancient amphitheaters, sacrificial alters, and burial chambers. The museum displays exhibits of clothing, jewelry, and other artifacts.
Strolling through the center of Zihuatanejo, you'll admire the terracotta streets, the traditional wooden rooftops, and the silversmith and craft shops. Along the waterfront piers, you'll partake of local cuisine including shellfish, shrimp, and seafood tacos.
